Description
Shaanxi, circa 1860
Bring a slice of Chinese history into your home with this wonderful old cabinet that is full of character. It comes from Shaanxi province in northern China, in a distinctive style typical of furniture from the region, with ornate carvings and with panels and doors set within thick, rounded frames. Secure metal fixings over the drawers and doors were attached to allow the owner to store their valuables and personal possessions. The cabinet’s autumnal colouring and finish are original, though softened and muted over the years, as with the black frames and extended top surface. Traces of paintings can be seen on the door panels, each in a circular format. Beautiful carved relief of flowers and leaves decorate the main single drawer with a plain drop handle that forms part of the locking system. The front spandrels taper down to the cabinet’s feet and are also in decorative carved relief, showing long, intertwining dragons. A lovely storage cabinet that will add warmth and charm to any setting.
