Description
I am a Tagaya Small Wood Plate. The darker the wood plate, the sweeter its grain.
Curator’s Notes
The genius in design of this small plate lies in its deceptively thin edge. When viewed from above, the edges seem to taper to nothing, creating a diaphanous effect to a material as solid as wood. We loved working with industrial designer Makoto Koizumi to create a piece versatile in its function. We use it as a light, stackable coaster, but its thin food-safe coating makes it great for serving small snacks or appetizers. The prominent, high-contrast grain looks especially beautiful when contained in a simple circle. Known as “Tagayasan” in Japanese and commonly as “Bombay Blackwood”, it was traditionally used to craft wooden swords. The material is prized for its durability and resistance to corrosion.
