Curator’s Notes

This is the second iteration of Makoto Koizumi’s award-winning cast iron kettle. Here, Koizumi-san has made adjustments to his original design to improve its functionality. An easy-to-hold round wood knob makes it convenient to lift the lid when hot, and the lid’s new circular shape allows it to hang off the edge of the opening. I love when designers continually seek to improve their designs! It shows that their focus is on the human who uses their work – an attribute that Koizumi-san certainly possesses. Each of his designs is thoughtfully, carefully designed for a beautiful user experience.
