Curator’s Notes
Perfect symmetry is replaced by dramatic angles, unusual shapes, and irregular texture in this one-of-a-kind piece by Masanobu Ando. This vase is the perfect size for holding a bouquet from a loved one – not too small and not too large. It has a lively form that appears to arch up towards the flowers it holds. The slight twist creates the movement that brings the object seemingly to life. The white glaze is applied with a liberal hand with painterly strokes. The rich matte glaze drips freely down the sides of the clay form, as enticing as freshly applied icing sugar.
