Curator’s Notes
Norio Tanno’s way of crafting intricate wood objects continues to amaze me. For many years Tanno-san told us that he would be retiring from woodworking and handing down the ranks to his son, Masakage Tanno, but we’re relieved to see that he is back at it! What amazes me the most about these business card cases are that they are carved out of a single piece of wood with no other materials except for one spring that securely closes the box with a satisfying click. A barely visible diagonal cut line indicates the lid of the case while never interrupting the continuous wood grain. Each one has a natural warm wood presence enhanced by smooth rounded edges that conform to the hand.
