Description

I am a Chawan Void Sculpture. Obi-chawan-kenobi, may the force be with you.

Curator’s Notes

Of all the pieces involved in traditional tea ceremony, the chawan plays the principal role. Tea Master and ceramicist Masanobu Ando pays tribute to this sacred object with this sculpture, which both is and is not a chawan. Rather, it represents the space held by a chawan – the void itself. Individual coils of clay varying in shape and size all converge in the powerful form of a single object. The sculpture trancends established concepts of beauty or ugliness and meditating on its form is calming, like having a cup of tea. A stunning accent and interesting object to display on your shelf.
