Curator’s Notes

When I first saw these cups I personally purchased them not for use, but because I fell in love with the ‘sugar white’ glaze, as Masanobu Ando calls it. The white is slightly granular, so it doesn’t have a flat matte look to it. It also feels better in your hands when drinking something as comforting as tea. Honestly, I didn’t even know how to drink Chinese or Japanese tea when I acquired them years ago, but after learning how to prepare tea properly, I began to realize how much an appropriately proportioned teacup adds to the experience.
