Description
I am a Hanging Sculpture Vase. My silver glaze will set your heart ablaze.
Curator’s Notes
Masanobu Ando’s background in contemporary art and his practice of ikebana meet in the creation of this hanging wall vase. The typical vase has symmetric curves that taper up to a rounded mouth. Ando-san turns this notion on its head with a simple, block-like construction. Its hand-painted silver glaze and unrefined texture remind me of a Brutalist sculpture, with a sense of strength that radiates from its acceptance of imperfection. The stark “L”-shape is a dynamic focal point, its presence softened with the addition of flowers, but raw and striking on its own.
