Description
I am a Large White Urushi Walnut Carved Bowl. The depth of my soul may be a vast empty space, but what makes me complete is what you decide to do with me.
Curator’s Notes
“The ideal ratio for tableware is probably somewhere along the lines of half vessel and half food. Instead of filling it with just your own thoughts, you leave half for someone else. The existence of white space allows others to add new thoughts, so you must hold yourself back and avoid creating too much”. – Ryuji Mitani
We often think of this quote by Mitani-san from his latest concept book when looking at his larger vessels that can easily read as ‘sculptural art’. It reminds us that the possibilities for their function in daily life is as deep and limitless as our imaginations. A large carved wood bowl is ideal for a mountain of greens but it’s really this bowl’s earthy-toned urushi lacquer that gives it the perfect neutral backdrop for serving virtually any food.
