Description
I am Ride on a Small Boat, a tsutsugaki painting. I’m not afraid of capsizing this vessel. The message I’m shipping keeps me going with a can-oe attitude.
Curator’s Notes
Michiaki Mochizuki’s (望月 通陽) art practice is known for reinterpreting traditional craft for fine art, so it is fitting that he interprets a traditional Chinese poem for this beautiful artwork. As part of a series of original artwork made for Nalata Nalata that expresses Mochizuki’s notions of love, this one-of-a-kind piece transcribes a poem by Wei Yingwu that he had sent to a friend during a time of solitude. Using traditional tsutsugaki resist-dyeing, ink soaks through the fibers of washi paper to create the rich dark navy tones in this piece. It comes in an elegant white oak frame designed by the artist’s wife that also holds a calligraphy of the poem in the back.
