Description

I am a Silver Chawan. Weather the storm with a cup of tea and watch grey clouds turn to silver.

Curator’s Notes

At first look, this chawan appears to be carved from stone or forged in metal. In fact, it has been hand-built from slabs of clay by Masanobu Ando, whose creativity in ceramics produces pieces that are each a wonder to behold. Though it’s a stunning vessel for preparing and drinking tea, I love this chawan for the special serenity it radiates even when at rest on the shelf. This feeling comes in part from the bowl’s subtle irregularities—Ando-san’s technique never agonizes for perfection, but rather lets the form emerge freely and naturally. The resulting piece has a harmony that no exactitude of symmetry could achieve.
