Curator’s Notes
During research for our own designs, we’ve developed a newfound appreciation for white and the different meanings it has within design. Kenya Hara’s book on the subject is an important guide for us that helped expand the notion of white beyond color. In White, Hara explores how white relates to the origins of Japanese aesthetics. Drawing parallels to the fact that white is the absence of color, Hara puts forth the concepts of emptiness and the absolute void as the principles underlying Japanese design.
