Description
Gujarat, circa 1880
This extraordinary chest was produced in Gujarat province in India around the early part of the twentieth century. It would have been produced to hold an impressive dowry and is wonderfully crafted with detailed carvings on the front and sides. Two narrow, central doors and an upper hinged panel allow access to the full space inside and are fitted with a simple brass clasp. The chest sits on its old, wooden wheels, originally allowing this very heavy item to be more easily manoeuvred. The relief carvings set into the panels on the front are beautifully crafted, depicting symmetrical symbols, birds and, on the central doors, a pair of elephants. Note also the six horse heads to the top and bottom. A unique piece with all of its original character that would be a conversation starter in any home.
